How to Measure For Curtains

When Planning to install curtains, careful measuring is the key to achieving the look you want. For great results, follow these easy steps to determine the hardware and curtain length you will need.

Guide to Window Hardware

Is your window square?

Before deciding on which mount you will use, measure your window to be sure it is square. Measure diagonally from the two top corners to the two bottom corners. If the two measurements are significantly different, the window is not aligned and you should choose the Wall Mount method.

Choosing a Mounting Option:

Trim Mount

Mounting hardware brackets directly to the trim shows off the actual size of your window. (The trim is the decorative moulding around the window frame.)

Wall Mount

To bring a fuller look to your window, use this option. Mount hardware brackets 8cm beyond and 10-15cm above the window trim.

Inside Mount

If you want your moulding to show, you'll want to use an Inside Mount. The hardware should be attached just inside the frame.

Time to Measure

Once you have chosen the mounting option that works best for your window, it's time to measure your windows to determine hardware length. Keep in mind that if you have chosen the Wall Mount option, you will need to add 15cm to the length of your rods. Also, depending on what style you choose, finials can add up to 10cm on each end of the rod, so you want to make sure there is enough clearance to allow for your finials.

Guide to Curtains

Choose Your Look:

Curtains should always be long enough to reach the windowsill, but how much farther they extend is a personal decision. There are two options for displaying curtains: to the sill (or just below the sill) and to the floor. For deeply recessed windows, you'll want the curtain to be at sill length, or just below. If the width of your mounting measurement is less than 224cm, we recommend at least two curtains. If your measurement exceeds 224cm, additional curtains will be required for total coverage.

Choose a Mounting Option:

Sill Length

Shorter curtains make a formal room more casual. Measure from the top of the window mount (A, B) to the sill (C) or just below the sill (D).

Floor Length

Floor-length curtains lend presence to a small window. Measure from the top of the window mount (A, B) to the floor (E).

Important Safety Tips

Do not place cots within 46cm of curtains, curtain pulls or curtain cords. Keeping cots away from windows is your best option to ensure safety.
